Schools: Add your parents to MBC now -- Parent Portal coming soon!

Now that the major work on the Schoolwork redesign is out of the way, I'm pleased to announce that our developers are putting the finishing touches on the Parent Portal.

When we first previewed the Parent Portal to a select group of MBC customers back in June at the MBC Summer Academy, we talked about the basic capabilities and technical requirements. Last week, the MBC development team gave a live demonstration of the Parent Portal during the monthly MBC Trainers Update Webinar. I got a chance to sit in on the presentation, and I'm pleased to be able to share some more information on what to expect, and how to prepare.

First of all, the Parent Portal is designed to be viewable on just about any device with a web browser -- no app required. Parents will see an activity feed that includes school and group announcements, and upcoming events. Parents will be able to message their students and school staff, and can see their students' schoolwork and uploads. They'll also have access to group and school resources and calendars.

Access to the Parent Portal is based on information you import into My Big Campus from your Student Information System (Schools Information Management System). This is so we can associate individual students with their legal parents or guardians, and preserve student confidentiality. If you're a Lightspeed customer and your school or district is not yet set up for SIS imports, we encourage you to read the SIS Imports technical note to familiarize yourself with the process.

Schools and districts can start importing parent information right away and make preparations to inform parents of their accounts. Start now, and when the Parent Portal goes live, parents will be able to log in immediately. We'll have more information, including training materials, as we get closer to releasing the new Parent Portal.

As always, I'm eager to read your questions or suggestions related to the subject of this blog. Let me know what you think in the comments.
